For as long as I can remember, resilience meant something pretty straightforward. You get knocked down, you get back up. A storm hits, you rebuild. A factory burns, you recover. The assumption underneath was simple enough, that disruptions are events. They have beginnings and endings. The world wobbles, then returns to its previous shape. That assumption is breaking.

Adapteo participated in the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), the “flagship” annual climate summit organized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This year COP30 was hosted in Belém, Brazil (November 10–21), and it aimed to bring together world governments, civil-society groups, scientists, and businesses like ours in order to discuss and advance global climate action.

The host emphasized implementation as in “how will we execute what we already committed to”, and this year's conference had a strong focus on infrastructure, cities, resilience, and climate-adaptation.

This last year, the world of sustainability professionals has been buzzing with equal parts anticipation and trepidation around the tsunami of EU regulations and directives that are quickly upon us (but more on that later). Some have long grasped that the EU, with their bureaucratic finesse, and smoke and mirrors, is stealthily manhandling the private sector towards a radical shift on how to do business in Europe.

While others, disappointingly, have underestimated the magnitude and force of what is happening. We expect a very ugly wake-up call for the latter group especially as the effects are beginning to seep into the C-suite level and board rooms.
